Change the Whole Look of Your Smile

June 23, 2016

Dental veneers offer a simple way to change the look of your smile, whether you want to improve the appearance of one tooth or all of them. Kelly Vaughn, D.D.S.; Nalini Kataria, D.M.D.; Emil Orza, D.M.D., and David Wang, D.M.D., your Kennesaw, Marietta and Woodstock, GA dentists at 1st Choice Dental Care, share several advantages of veneers.Veneers

Veneers are thin but tough

At first glance, you might think that wafer-thin veneers aren't thick enough to cover imperfections in your smile and stand up to wear and tear, but these thin shells are incredibly durable. Veneers are made of porcelain, a material that looks very much like your tooth enamel, and are very resistant to staining. Since they're only attached to the fronts of your teeth, they don't require extensive dental work.

Veneers are versatile

Veneers can conceal a variety of flaws, including:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth: Wear and tear or grinding your teeth can cause chips that are noticeable when you smile, laugh or talk. Veneers cover those imperfections very effectively. If grinding caused your problem, you'll want to wear a nightguard to prevent damage to your new veneer.
  • Gaps between your teeth: If you're self-conscious about slight gaps between your teeth, veneers offer the perfect way to hide those spaces.
  • Short teeth: Your smile may look a little lopsided if one tooth is shorter than the surrounding teeth. When you add a veneer, your tooth blends in with nearby teeth.
  • Discolorations: Whether a tooth is discolored due to a large filling, root canal treatment or tetracycline use, veneers can disguise the problem.
  • All-over whitening: Veneers are a good choice if you want to whiten your teeth but haven't been satisfied with home or professional whitening. Whitening can lighten your teeth as much as eight shades, but sometimes it's not possible to achieve the perfect shade with whitening alone. Since veneers are available in a range of shades, you can choose one that will make your smile stand out.

Getting veneers is easy

The veneer process can be completed in as little as two dental visits. During the first visit, your dentist will file down the front surfaces of your teeth slightly and make an impression which will be sent to a dental laboratory. You'll be given a temporary set of veneers to wear until the lab finishes your permanent veneers. When you return, your dentist will test the fit, make any adjustments, then attach the veneers to your teeth with dental cement.
